John Hopkins to Take a Year Off from Racing
John Hopkins is to take a year out from racing to allow himself to recover fully from the multiple serious injuries that have plagued him throughout the 2012 season. In particular, a nagging hip injury first incurred at Monza has forced the American to take a break from racing, in order to allow his injuries to heal completely before attempting to race again. It is a rare thing for motorcycle racers to make sensible decisions ...

Confidence high as Marc VDS head east
The Marc VDS Racing Team head East to contest three races in as many weekends in Japan, Malaysia and Australia, starting this week with the Japanese Grand Prix at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit.Scott Redding heads to Japan with renewed confidence, after an impressive podium finish last time out at Aragon. The British teenager likes the technical nature of the Motegi circuit and is looking forward to matching or even bettering his fifth place finish at the 2010 Japanese Grand Prix this weekend.Aragon was a major disappointment for Mika Kallio, with 16th position ending his run of unbroken points scoring finishes that started at the opening round in Qatar. The 29-year-old Finn is determined to make amends and break back into the top five at Motegi, a track at which he has won three times in the past but doesn't count as one of his favourites.Opened in 1999, the 4.8km Twin Ring circuit, some 160km north of Tokyo, sits in a rural landscape and, as its name suggests, boasts not one but two tracks: a "super speedway" oval and the longer, snaking "road course", which Redding and Kallio will be tackling this weekend.Scott Redding #45:"Motegi is a technical track, with a lot of places where you're really hard on the brakes, especially into the downhill corners. I know it's not popular with a lot of riders, but I quite like it. I had a good run out at Aragon, where I finished on the podium, so I'm pretty confident going into this weekend's race in Japan. Obviously I'll be keeping an eye on Mika, as he has designs on my fifth position in the championship, but the main aim at Motegi will be to repeat the success of Aragon and secure my fifth podium finish of the season."Mika Kallio #36:"I've won three times in the past at Motegi, so the track obviously suits me, but it's definitely not one of my favourite circuits. It's a bit boring to ride, as it's very stop start with hard braking followed by slow corners and then hard acceleration. I had a disappointing result last time out at Aragon, where we had some problems in the race, but I'm confident that we won't have the same issues in Japan. I've already shown I have the pace to be up at the front and fighting in the top five, which is exactly where I need to be this weekend at Motegi."Michael Bartholemy: Team Principal"Three races in three weekends, with thousands of kilometres in between each, is a tough prospect for Scott, Mika and the team. But it's the same for everyone and I'm confident that we'll return to Europe at the end of this month with both riders having secured good results in Japan, Malaysia and Australia to consolidate their positions in the championship. Scott and Mika are both confident going into this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix. Scott was on the podium last time out and, while he claims he doesn't really like the Motegi circuit, Mika has won there on both a 125cc and 250cc machine in the past. Racing in Japan is always very different to racing in Europe, but we need to approach this weekend in the same way as every other if we are to challenge for a podium finish once again."Communication Marc VDS Racing Team - www.marcvds.com -

More Moto2 And Moto3 Movement: Danny Kent Moves To Tech 3, Replaced By Luis Salom At Red Bull KTM
The Moto2 and Moto3 markets are stepping up a gear as the 2012 season winds to a close, and the top seats in both the Moto2 and Moto3 class are starting to fill up. Today, the Tech 3 team announced that they have signed young British rider Danny Kent to a two-year contract to race for the team in Moto2. Kent has had a strong third season in Grand Prix, being a front row regular and bagging his first podium at Assen this year. The young Briton has regularly scored solid points in the ultra-competitive Moto3 class, running as wingman to current championship leader Sandro Cortese on the Red Bull KTM. Kent will line up alongside Frenchman Louis Rossi at Tech 3, though the addition of Kent makes the Tech 3 squad a very English affair, with Kent joining the team's MotoGP line up of Cal Crutchlow and Bradley Smith.

Trackside Tuesday: The Face of a Champion
Even before I met Max Biaggi in 2011, I had the sense that here was someone who takes himself and his racing pretty seriously. From the immaculately trimmed facial hair, to his manner in the pit box, to his long career as a motorcycle racer, if there is anything he takes lightly, it is certainly not racing. Some riders are approachable, quick to smile, who naturally put others at ease even on race weekends. Biaggi ...

Big Ken De Dycker set to tackle Weston Beach Race
RHL Activities is excited to announce that MX1 factory KTM star Ken de Dycker has made a last minute decision to join his MX2 counterpart Jeffrey Herlings for his debut beach race, which is fuelled by Monster Energy, at Weston-Super-Mare this weekend.
De Dycker, who is known for his expertise in the sand of his homeland in Belgium, is a 28-year-old racer and is looking forward to a new type of challenge to conclude his successful season with the KTM squad. It will certainly be no easy task, as the 6’2 star will be racing his younger teammate Herlings, who is arguably the fastest sand rider in the world at the present time, along with the more experienced beach racers Shaun Simpson and Brad Anderson, who have both been podium finishers in the past.
De Dycker has a noticeably unusual style and it’s going to be an exciting spectacle to see him racing around at the maddest and baddest race, which is annually the biggest off-road event in the UK, alongside the many fans that take on the three-hour endurance challenge this year. A former Grand Prix winner and podium finisher this season, where he concluded the year in fifth in the standings against some of the toughest competition in years, De Dycker has a lot of racing experience on his side as well as a gritty, hard riding style.
“It is quite late for my entry so we’ve not got the best set-up possible and I’ll be running a fairly standard bike, but I have seen some videos from before and there are a lot of spectators, so I’m really looking forward to doing the race for the first time with the aim of continuing for the next few years. I have done one long race in the past, but I just hope we don’t have any problems, so I’ll be trying to keep enough fuel on-board, stay relaxed and not push too hard because it’s a long race,” said De Dycker.
“I’ve heard the start straight is long, so I hope my bike will be fast down there, as it’s a bit of a disadvantage for me with my size, but we’ll be modifying the bike and changing the gearing to compensate. From a results point of view I’ll definitely be racing for the podium, as it’s in every racers mind to do his best, but I think it’s possible and I can ride sand pretty well. I do know it’s different though on the seafront, and the closest I’ve got to racing on the beach is riding in the winter at Dunkirk. There’s some good competition; Herlings is fast but it’s all about riding my own race and you never know, as anything can happen. I know you have to be careful with the other riders and it can be a bit crazy, but I’m really looking forward to it,” concluded the Belgian racer.
The RHL Beach Race at Weston-Super-Mare is no easy feat for any of the riders taking on the challenge. Bike preparation, strategy and endurance is key to good results, so this may be where the experience that Anderson and Simpson have will play its part. De Dycker won’t want to go home empty handed though, and at this 30th anniversary event it’s going to be one of the most exciting line-ups, comprised with a load of off-track entertainment to form part of one of the most exhilarating events yet.

Ride to eat: Williamson
In addition to the graduation and Memorial Day activities we enjoyed this past weekend, we also managed to squeeze in a ride. (I actually squeezed in a solo ride, too.) On Saturday, we took off on a short “ride to eat” trip with Garry and Shirley to the tiny town of Williamson, Iowa.
This trip took us southeast along Highway 5 out of Carlisle to County Road S45, which we took south through Melcher-Dallas, then a short jog on State Highway 14 and in to Williamson.
At our destination, lunch at the Williamson Tavern was large and cheap – it was also the only thing to do in this tiny town of under 200 people. The view from the main road in either direction is testimony to the “sleepiness” of this little place, which is still three times bigger than Millerton! (Garry & Shirley also ended up buying us lunch – what Williamson lacks in venues it also lacks in ATM’s. Thanks guys, next time we’ll try to remember to bring cash!)
After lunch we headed back out along the same route, but stopped in Melcher-Dallas for a couple of pictures. We had detoured through this hyphenated town on our way down (instead of passing right by), and I wanted to go back and catch pictures of a bridge and a mural.
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find any information about either of these local features. My “keen eye for the obvious” tells me the bridge is very old, given the weathered boards showing through under the top layer of asphalt. It arches over train tracks that run parallel to the highway. Heading into town isn’t as tricky as heading back out – the bridge dumps you right at the highway with a very short approach and a sharp downhill slope.
The other photo opp was this really neat mural painted on the back wall of the Melcher-Dallas Coal Mining Heritage Museum. A small landscaped seating area provides space to enjoy the artwork, which is signed simply “D.E. Adams, ’98.”
I posted more pictures from this ride on the BCN Facebook Page.
After taking my pictures we headed home along a route that included G76 west and S23 north. We did have one near-incident along S23 – I spotted what I thought was roadkill in the middle of the road up ahead, but quickly figured out that it was actually moving (walking) right to left. Uncertain whether it was something that could quickly reverse course, I slowed way down and went around it on the right – turned out to be a large turtle – my friends followed, but not before riding up on each other a bit too quickly. Of course I didn’t see this happening behind me, but I learned later that by slowing I had almost caused them to wreck in the back. Not good!
This, plus another near-incident on my solo Monday ride and my recent bike drop in the garage, have sort of caused me to wonder if I’m “off my feed” this year for some reason… maybe thinking too hard, or not thinking enough… anyway, it feels like I need to take a breath and push the re-start button on this riding season!

Provisional World Superbike Calendar for 2013 Released
At Magny-Cours this weekend, World Superbike released its provisional calendar for the 2013 WSBK Championship. Subject to some change, maybe more so now that Dorna is in charge of things, the big changes to the 2013 calendar over this season is the addition of a round in India, as well as the American round moving from Miller Motorsports Park to Laguna Seca. World Superbike returns to Russia again for 2013, helping the series branch out ...

Fun with flags: ride to Brooklyn, Iowa
What a crazy summer! We had a very short break in the heat recently, then back up into the upper 90′s and low hundreds for a couple more weeks – yikes!! Now here we are at the end of July already – but, thankfully I have three days off from work and temps are only going to be low 90′s so I’m going riding! Hopefully I will have a few more adventures to share soon!
Did have one lovely ride back in early July, what a neat day this was! I’d heard about this small town called Brooklyn that has a large display of flags from all 50 states and several other nations. I thought it sounded like a perfect reason to ride, so off we went. Our group consisted of Steve and I, Garry, street-rodding-turned-biker-pal Dave R., and Howard and Jayka.
We took off in the afternoon heading east along one of my favorite roads – it starts out as Broadway Ave. in Des Moines, becomes 8th St. SE in Altoona, then morphs into County Road F48 and finally old Highway 6. This is just a beautiful road – pretty and curvaceous between Des Moines and Grinnell, then a straight bit east from Grinnell to Highway 63, where we made a right turn into Brooklyn.
Once in Brooklyn we stopped at a tiny convenience store that seemed to be the hub of Sunday activity in this town of just under 1,400 people. After a beverage I walked from the store up to the flag display, which was on the adjacent property. It includes 3×5 flags from every state, plus several special-interest (military service) flags and a 20 x 38-foot US flag at the center on an 80-foot pole, all installed along a pretty walkway next to the Brooklyn Historical Society Museum.
Gave me vertigo standing under the US flag, looking up… thought I was gonna fall over backwards!
Here are some of the state flags on display. This photo looks back toward the street.
Also thought this was neat, something I’d never seen before: the name of the street actually etched into the cement of the curb. Neat detail!
The international flags are displayed in smaller groups along the two main streets of town. You can barely glimpse a few of them on the left side of this streetscene.
Across from the convenience store stands this old Standard Oil station – looks to be about mid-1930′s to me. As I walked over to it to take a picture, a guy drove up in a ’50 Chevy. What a great photo opp! I flagged him down and asked him to pause for a picture – he told me he had just bought the car that day. I took a neat photo of his 50′s car in front of the 30′s gas station, then gave it a little ‘retro’ effect in my photo editing program to create a cool vintagey snapshot.
Here are a couple more pictures of the gas station – just because I know you love this stuff as much as I do!
Brooklyn also has several oldie-but-goodie buildings along its two main streets. This opera house…

… and my favorite, the First National Bank.
All of this exploration only took us about an hour, so it seemed in no time we were back on the bikes and headed home along the same route we’d come in. Along the route I noticed two bridges named for Civil War generals James Wilson & James Weaver, and in looking them up I learned that old Highway 6 (which runs coast-to-coast, by the way) is also known as Grand Army of the Republic Highway. I’ve long been aware that the GAR is/was the veterans organization serving Civil War Veterans, but I didn’t realize that Highway 6 was named for it. There are several commemorative markers and named bridges along the route.
Few things are better in my book – a perfect blue sky day for a ride along scenic Iowa roads, a stop in a pretty small town with a unique or interesting feature, and a little bit of history thrown in for good measure.
More adventures coming soon!

Nicky Hayden reveals Aragon fracture
Nicky Hayden looks to have suffered another right hand fracture as a result of his scary Aragon MotoGP accident.
The factory Ducati star speared off-track through the fast final turn at the end of lap two of the race.
Unable to slow down sufficiently in the run-off area, the American then slammed into an advertising board. The force of the impact launched Hayden over the top of the tyre barrier and onto an access road.
Hayden previously suffered fractures to the second and third metacarpal on the same hand during his huge Indianapolis qualifying accident, in mid-August, which also forced him to miss Brno.
"I thought I had escaped unscathed from the crash at Aragon, but unfortunately it looks like I picked up another injury," said Hayden in the run-up to this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix.
"When I got home, my right hand was bothering me a bit, so I went for an X-ray and CT scan, and it turns out I have a fracture in my right radius.
"It's definitely not the best situation, but as it's not too painful and I have pretty good grip strength, I'm hopeful that it won't cause too many problems this weekend.
"Racing's full of ups and downs. We'll try to ride this one out and hopefully get a decent result in Japan to get a little momentum going and get some confidence back."
Unfortunately for Hayden, Motegi is the first of three races in successive weekends.
